Republicans were jubilant today over on the election of Republican Scott Brown to fill the U.S. Senate seat that once belonged to the late Sen. Ted Kennedy, D-Mass. And David Castillo, an Olympia Republican running for this state's 3rd Congressional District seat, was first out of the blocks to comment...
"The election of Scott Brown as the United States Senator from Massachusetts is an historic event. His election shows people are tired of business-as-usual in Washington D.C. – the 'backroom deals' and political payoffs that do nothing more than grow government and contribute to out-of-control spending. I look forward to joining Senator Brown and all other common sense leaders who know that our focus must be on job creation, economic recovery and fiscal responsibility. The citizens of southwest Washington, and all the American people, deserve nothing less."
State Rep. Doug Ericksen, R-Ferndale, said the victory by Brown, which takes away a 60th Democratic vote in the U.S. Senate, forces a change in direction on health reform.
Ericksen said Washington legislators now must look to state reforms instead of the federal plan his minority party opposed. The state House Health Care and Wellness Committee chair, Rep. Eileen Cody, wrote a Ericksen a letter dated Jan. 11 that says the focus this year is on making Washington’s health-reform efforts align with what Congress is doing.
