Castillo Statement on Senator Harry Reid's "no Negro dialect" Remarks

Written On: Monday, January 11, 2010

STATEMENT:

The recent disclosure of Senator Harry Reid's racially insensitive comments regarding then presidential candidate Barack Obama have again shown a glaring double-standard on how we deal with racial remarks by politicians in this country.

Senator Reid would have never made his remark publicly, but when it was revealed to the public, there is little outrage from the media and President Obama casually accepts his apology because he claims to know what is in the Senator’s heart.  As a person of color, who has experienced racism firsthand, I have found that what someone says behind closed doors, does most certainly come from the heart.

Any Republican making these remarks would be labeled a racist and quickly asked to resign.  When Trent Lott made similar remarks, President George W. Bush and his own party asked him to resign.

This situation is hypocrisy at its highest and it must stop.  Harry Reid should step down.

Democratic leadership has all to often used the term racist in an attempt to silence political opponents and now we see that these type of conversations are had behind closed doors.  It is time we get beyond party affiliation and simply look at what people actually say.

It is time to rise above the double standard.
