RELEASE: Unemployment Numbers Worse Than Expected

Castillo claims deficit spending not a solution as stimulus plan continues to sputter

The nation’s economy continues to shed jobs as the Bureau of Labor Statistics announces 85,000 jobs were lost in the month of December.  (Wall Street Journal's MarketWatch)

These numbers suggest a very sluggish national recovery and the local economic recovery in the 3rd Congressional District is facing even tougher times.

Congressional candidate David Castillo has consistently referred to the so-called stimulus bill as "wasteful government spending on the pet projects of members of Congress who are clearly unresponsive to the will of the American people."

Having opposed the stimulus bill from the beginning, Castillo continues to assert, "Congress should admit that their unprecedented level of government spending has not worked and return the remaining money to its rightful owner - the American people."

A financial advisor by trade, Castillo admits there are signs that the economy is slowly struggling to emerge from these ongoing doldrums.  However, he is concerned that the Democratic majority in Congress has delivered no solutions to invigorate small business - which he refers to as "the engine of our economy".

From the time he announced his candidacy, Castillo has promoted what he refers to as "Common Sense Solutions" to spur economic growth and job creation.  They are:  Oppose “Cap and Trade” legislation that will decimate businesses; Limit growth in government spending to the rate of inflation; Lower the payroll tax; Lower the corporate income tax; Reduce or eliminate capital gains taxes.  Castillo would eventually like to see the current tax code replaced with a Fair Tax (national sales tax).

"Out-of-control deficit spending is not a solution for job creation.  It is an economic policy that does nothing more than further indebt our children and grandchildren," concludes Castillo. "It must stop now."

Castillo, who declared his candidacy well before the surprise announcement that incumbent Congressman Brian Baird would not seek re-election, is a veteran of the United States Navy and worked in the administration of President George W. Bush at the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Department of Homeland Security.
