Washington state House Republican Leader Richard DeBolt,
R-Chehalis, has announced he will not make a bid for U.S. Rep. Brian
Baird’s seat in 2010 after speculation that he might be one of the next
candidates to file.
“Since the announcement of Rep. Brian
Baird’s retirement, I have been encouraged by the words of support and
the thoughtful perspectives many of you have shared on the merits of
running for Congress,” DeBolt said in a statement. “While there is a
strong appeal to bring solutions to the failures of Washington, D.C., I
will not be a candidate for Congress this year. Instead I will continue
to represent our communities in the state Legislature.”
DeBolt will also continue to stand behind Republican David Castillo,
R-Olympia, whom he initially endorsed early on in the race before
Baird’s surprise retirement announcement.
“David still has my unwavering support and I believe he would be
a strong partner as we work together to provide a voice for the
families of Southwest Washington,” DeBolt also said in the statement.
Castillo said he was excited about DeBolt’s “unmitigated and
uncompromising support,” after others...entered the race.
However, he wasn’t surprised by DeBolt choosing not to run.
“He has done a great job as Republican Leader, and Lewis County and the
state of Washington benefit from him in that position,” Castillo said.
