Did you watch with
trepidation as 60 United State Senators decided to begin debating the assault
on our liberty and freedom that is health insurance “reform”? If you share my love of liberty then I
wouldn’t be at all surprised if you were a little sick to your stomach when you
read that the 60-vote threshold had been achieved. It continues to amaze me that this Congress is so blinded by
their quest for the progressive holy grail of nationalized health care that
they have completely turned their collective backs on the American people and
200-plus years of constitutional principles.
I am not an attorney (although
I married an excellent one), nor am I a constitutional scholar. However, I am a student of history – and
I know that there has been no time in American history where the United States
government forced Americans to purchase something or face the consequences of
inaction. Yet, this Congress and
their abomination of a bill does just that. For the first time ever, you are going to be forced to
purchase a product of their choosing (health insurance) or face exorbitant
fines - or worse, time in jail.
What we are seeing is the
absolute height of arrogance.
Speaker Nancy Pelosi had the audacity to laugh in the face of a questioner
who asked if Congress had the constitutional authority to mandate health
insurance. In their excellent
article in the Washington Post (http://tinyurl.com/kn779h) David Rivkin,
Jr. and Lee Casey make a compelling case that the current reform is not
constitutional. Rivkin and Lee
remind us:
“The
Constitution assigns only limited, enumerated powers to Congress and none,
including the power to regulate interstate commerce or to impose taxes, would
support a federal mandate requiring anyone who is otherwise without health
insurance to buy it.”
They go on to explain that
Members of Congress will invoke the commerce clause when arguing for the
constitutionality of health care reform, but the authors make an extensive
argument as to why those members are dead wrong. It is high time that we require our elected Representatives
to stand by the oath that they have taken and uphold our Constitution!
America stands at a
crossroads. I am not one for
hyperbole, but I truly believe we are witnessing the largest assault on
American’s liberty that we have seen in our lifetime. We are facing a Congress, with people like Nancy Pelosi and
Brian Baird, who believe with a religious fervor that government – which has
shown they can’t effectively manage Medicare, Medicaid, or even swine flu
vaccines – will somehow effectively deliver health care to everyone without
coverage and not already stuck in one these broken systems.
You and I know better. I urge you to stand together with all
of us and continue to press your Senators and member of Congress to stop this
dangerous march away from traditional American values. Larger, more intrusive government means
fewer freedoms and less liberty.
We need representatives in
Congress who will speak for the American people. I want to be one of those
voices that will speak for and defend the constitutional principles that have
made our country great.
Please join me on this
journey. Together we can ensure the
promise of America is available for generations to come.
